    P1876 - Networked Smart Learning Objects for Online Laboratories


    SCOPE: This standard defines methods for storing and retrieving learning objects for remote laboratories. The standard will also define methods for linking learning objects to design and implement smart learning environments for remote online laboratories. These objects are, for example, interfaces for devices connected to user computers over computers networks and the devices themselves. They are also learning scenarios or collaboration tools for communications necessary to conduct an activity of practical online laboratory work; to design and implement mechanisms that make smart learning environment formed by the ad hoc aggregation of learning objects taking into account the pedagogical context for their use.


    PURPOSE: To ease the design and implementation of pedagogically driven remote laboratory experiments and its learning environments. So far, the WG has agreed that Laboratory Work is a requirement in Engineering, Science and Technology Education. It aims at attaining pedagogical goals. Laboratory work is nowadays made possible thanks to technology-enhanced learning (TEL). TEL generally uses networked electronic devices such as computers (desktops, laptops, i-Pads, Personal Digital Assistants (PDA), as well as miniaturized networked measuring instruments or mechanical or electromechanical devices. Remote laboratories for engineering and science education are technology enhanced learning systems. They are becoming more and more popular. In many cases, a remote laboratory experiment consists in remotely interacting with devices over computer networks without necessarily reflecting the educational objectives that underlie the activities. This standard establish the relationship between all the components (Software, hardware and learning systems) in order to ease the design and implementation of pedagogically driven remote or mobile laboratory experiments since we know that hardware alone cannot help the learning process. The smart learning environments are built on-the-fly, by learning actors, using social media, social networks, cloud computing tools and Internet of Things.
